Lionel Messi has won the Ballon d’Or award, beating Robert Lewandowski and Jorginho.
Argentina’s first Copa America championship since 1993 was inspired by the forward, who also won the Copa del Rey with Barcelona before joining Paris Saint-Germain last summer.
Mohammed Salah of Liverpool, Cristiano Ronaldo of Manchester United, and Kareem Benzema of Real Madrid were among those nominated for the honour.
On Twitter, the hashtag #ballondorMessi trended as some football fans congratulated Messi on his record-breaking win, while others voiced disappointment that the prize was not presented to Lewandoski or Cristiano Ronaldo, who they believed deserved it more.
Lewandowski, on the other hand, was awarded Striker of the Year, one of two new prizes established by France Football for the Ballon d’Or this year.
Last season, the Polish striker scored 41 goals in 29 Bundesliga appearances for Bayern Munich and has continued in that scintillating form this season scoring 14 goals in 13 games at club level.
Other winners include Barcelona midfielder Alexia Putellas , who won the Ballon d’Or in the women’s football category.
.Gianluigi Donnarumma also won the Yashin Trophy, the award for best goalkeeper.
Spanish youngster Pedri was also named winner of the Kopa Trophy, the award for best performing player under the age of 21.
